How to use this animals word search
Animal names are a friendly way into longer words: kangaroo, flamingo and hedgehog are long but easy to sound out, and children already know them. The list spans habitats on purpose, from the ocean (octopus, dolphin, shark, whale) to forests and backyards (raccoon, squirrel, beaver) and grasslands (zebra, giraffe, cheetah), so it can lead straight into a sorting activity. Replace them with the animals your unit covers.
- Keep the list, or paste the animals from your current science unit, such as rainforest or ocean animals.
- Choose Medium for grades 2 to 4: words run across, down and diagonally.
- Print the puzzle and its answer key, or save a PDF.
Teacher tips
- After the puzzle, have students sort the animals by habitat, or into mammals, birds, fish and reptiles.
- Hide the word bank and read riddles instead ("I carry my baby in a pouch") for a harder version.
- Short names like fox and owl are tricky to spot. Point out that the smallest words are often the hardest.
- BingoSheet can turn the same list into bingo cards for a review game.
