How to use this spelling list word search

Spelling lists change every week, so pre-made puzzles almost never match. Here you paste the exact words and the puzzle is built around them, right in your browser. The sample list practices long vowel teams (ai, ay, oa, ow, ee, ea and igh), a common second grade pattern. Words with spaces, hyphens or apostrophes are fine: the grid gets the letters only, and the word bank keeps the spelling your students should copy.

  1. Delete the sample words and paste your list. One word per line works, and so does a comma-separated line copied from an email or a spreadsheet.
  2. Pick a grid at least as wide as your longest word. If a word does not fit, the page names it instead of quietly leaving it out.
  3. Choose Medium for second and third grade, or Hard (backwards and diagonal words) for older spellers who want a challenge.
  4. Print the puzzle and the answer key, or save both as a PDF for your class website.

Teacher tips

  • Hide the word bank for a tougher version: students must spell each word from memory before they can find it.
  • Ask students to write each word in their notebook as they find it. Finding, then copying, gives two looks at the spelling.
  • Keep last week's link: it recreates the same puzzle, which is handy for a review day or for a student who was absent.
  • Mixing in two review words from earlier weeks is an easy way to keep old patterns fresh.
